The revealing story of one man's lifelong passionate obsession with The Indianapolis 500, including why it is so revered among fans and how it has managed to endure for an entire century. Inside, the author travels from Texas to Indiana each year during a personally tumultuous decade, eventually culminating in his successful quest to take part in The Greatest Spectacle in Racing™ just in time to celebrate The Race's 100th birthday in 2011. Along the way, the man discovers God, his true self, and several hidden meanings within the sport he has long adored.

My first recollection of the Indianapolis 500 was the last restart of the 1986 race. Being a little boy, I cheered on a racecar driver, just cause his name was Kevin. As I watched with my mother, and Bobby Rahal "cheated" on the restart (being a kid, and not knowing the rules for restarts), I said "HE CAN'T DO THAT...HE CAN'T DO THAT!!" Upset because Kevin Cogan was passed before the start/finish line. Looking back many years later, and knowing Rahal's Truesports team owner Jim Trueman would probably never see another "500" again.

I fell in love with The Race in 1989, for obvious reasons. Never before (for me) did I watch on the edge of my seat, the last 15 laps of the race, much like a basketball fan watches the last inbounds pass in a tie game for the national championship, cheering for their favorite team in the final 0:02 seconds. Then having a feeling of 'hate' for Fittipaldi for (thru a boy's eyes remember) intentionally wrecking Little Al. I was hooked. And little did I know, that in just ten short years, I would visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time AND get to see one of the most entertaining finishes to that date, in person. It was fitting that Lee Greenwood sang "Proud to be an American". I couldnt help but become overwhelmed that I was actually at MY Graceland.

Charles West's book is a MUST READ for ANYONE who calls themselves a fan of The Race or the Speedway. If you can appreciate Her history, traditions and march of new technology...if you start counting down the days till the next race, even before leaving the stands of the one just completed, you need to read this book.

Indianapolis is much more than 'a race'. its much more than cars just boringly driving in a circle. its about the traditions and history of not only the track and The Race itself, but about the fans own personal traditions. Its about seeing friends and/or family that you only see once a year. its about fellowship with other humans who all have a common bond. The Indianapolis 500 and Memorial Day weekend.

If you have ever been there on raceway, while reading the book, you'll even pause to take stock in your own experiences that the author was experiencing at the same time. Its not just a good read, it is a bit motivational. Motivational because when you put the book down, you will feel a new found drive to finish what you start. Or to make changes in your life for the sake of being a better person...because The Lady in Silver will be around long after her adoring fans are long gone. Life is short.......don't waste it not living your dream.

Long Kiss 2nd edition by West Charles Paperback Charles West 9780557775170 Books Reviews

As a lifelong fan of the Indy 500, having attended my first race with my parents in 1950, it is easy to identify with West's obsession over "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." West captures the very essence of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is indeed a wondrous place for all race fans, young and old alike.

Although it was difficult at times to relate to West's troubled and painful family life, one can't help anxiously awaiting his next month of May and travels to my hometown for the annual event. West describes a decade of pilgrimages from Texas to Indianapolis, which in time helped him mature and find himself as a man.

"Long Kiss" is well written, West's descriptions of the Speedway colorful and accurate. I particularly liked his tremendous appreciation for Indy's history and traditions.

Over the years my husband and I have bought many books about the history of the "Indy 500," but this is the first book I've read written from the very personal point of view of a fan. I am pleased to add "Long Kiss" to our collection and to recommend it to all Indy 500 fans.

Justly Proud A German American Family in Indiana
It's not often I read a book that can move me to tears just about every time I pick it up, but this is one of them - and that's a good thing! It's a perfect summary of the sense of community, friendship and love that holds the IndyCar paddock together, from the perspective of a devout racing fan. The raw emotion that comes with being involved in racing, in any capacity, is so strong that anyone who knows what it feels like will find it fairly leaps off the page, and anyone who hasn't experienced it will likely find it irresistably intriguing.

What's more, I rarely read a book that makes me pause, re-read a sentence or paragraph, and think "...I am so glad I'm not the only person who feels this way." But, I found myself doing that time and time again with this book - and not just about the racing! The non-racing situations I'm referring to, I wouldn't wish upon anyone, but it's so reassuring to read and know I'm not alone.

I am very happy to see the names and stories of so many kind, caring, loving people who are passionate about the sport mentioned in this book, and I am utterly pleased to consider the author, a fellow racing fan, a dear friend.
In the book LONG KISS, I found a "kindred spirit". We both live in Texas and LOVE the Indianapolis 500. The author just happened to grow up in Texas and this reader grew up in INDY. The book is a mix of personal catharsis, self-therapy, passion, adventure, exploration and love for the best in motorsports. Sometimes I wanted to hear more, and sometimes I wanted to hear less, but YOU should read the book for your own interpretation. The two parts I loved the most (which are throughout the book) are all these great first-hand experiences with "racing personalities" and what I call behind the scene stories related to the INDY 500. Good grief! I lived in Indianapolis from 1958-1973 and missed so much of the greatest spectacle in racing, and I thank the author for these great stories! The second part is the author's rediscovery of himself. His journey to multiple race events paralleled multiple journeys in his personal growth. He had mental, physical, and spiritual challenges and has come out a winner like one who has won a race. But as the author and I know, we are in a bigger race. We may need some pit stops along the way, but we will be victorious!
Indy 500 Book tell a story that a goodly number of folks can relate too. But it tends to ramble a lot. Not a bad read, worth the price for a die-hard Indy 500 fan.
